An Aspect of OT That Has Remained The Same: Toileting

Occupational therapy has changed a lot throughout many era’s as we learned in our ERA presentations but there is an aspect that has remained the same in OT and that is the want to help people get to where they want to be so that they can perform the occupations that are meaningful to them. One occupation that has remained essential to most people is toileting. I remember when my aunt was disabled and could no longer use the restroom independently and it was the most frustrating situation for her. She was always grateful for her OT that helped her do toileting. It is the aspect of our lives that we so easily take for granted but once the ability is gone we feel like helpless children. Toileting is one aspect that occupational therapists can help with tremendously and over the decades it still remains the same that everyone would like to be able to take care of themselves in that aspect. It is a milestone to reach when we are in our first few years of life and even years after. To continue performing this task throughout our whole life is truly a blessing and occupational therapists have made this possible through many era's.
